I hope 2025 has started well for you. It’s been a busy and productive start for Council, and I’m excited to share what we’ve been working on.
In December we met with the Planning Minister’s advisers to voice our community’s concerns about the Victorian Government’s proposed planning changes, especially the impact on Boroondara’s unique heritage areas. Protecting our heritage is a key priority, and we believe that working with the Victorian Government will help us achieve the best outcomes for housing, planning and heritage. A collaborative approach will help make sure developments are carefully planned, respecting neighbourhood character while meeting community needs. We know you want housing in accessible, well-serviced locations, including affordable housing. The proposed changes include reduced rights to contest decisions made under the new guidelines, making Council’s strong advocacy even more important. We’re hosting a community planning forum on 11 February. I hope to see you there.
We’ve paused plans for the redevelopment of Kew Library to review all options, including refurbishment. The library is a much-loved part of Kew, and we’ll ensure the community has a say in shaping its future.
At Kew Recreation Centre, workers are back on site and construction is progressing with completion expected by the end of 2026. We’re also looking into the feasibility of replacing gas heating with heat pumps and will share updates when there’s more to report. I’m committed to keeping you updated as we move closer to delivering this vital facility.
I’m excited to share that we’ve established a new Climate Action Advisory Committee, which will work with local experts to help us achieve even greater change. Council has a key role to play in supporting residents to reduce emissions, transition to clean energy, and save on energy bills. Last year we put solar panels on community buildings, installed EV chargers and worked with you to plant thousands of plants. What do you want us to focus on next?
