About the project

The oval at Watson Park on Munro Avenue in Ashburton is a popular sports ground.

The upcoming works include:

  • replacement of the existing playing surfaces
  • replacement of the soccer goal posts
  • reconstruction of the turf wicket
  • installation of a new water storage tank and irrigation pump behind the sports pavilion. This will support more efficient irrigation to the oval and improve water savings.

These renewal works have been funded as part of our 2024–25 Capital Works Program.

We expect works to be completed in mid-2025.

During the works

Works will occur Monday to Friday from7 am to 5 pm, and some Saturday works may occur if required.

The oval will not be accessible for the duration of the works. Other areas of Watson Park, including the playground and Chamberlain Street car park, will remain open during these works.

If you use Watson Park oval for recreation, we encourage you to use nearby Dorothy Laver Reserve, Markham Reserve or Warner Reserve during these works.

For dog walkers who use the oval as a dog on-leash area, Dorothy Laver Reserve is also a dog on-leash area or alternatively Markham Reserve and Warner Reserve are the nearest dog off-leash areas.

We will create a temporary construction vehicle entrance to the oval on Baird Street for use throughout the works. This may result in a minor reduction in on-street parking availability near this entrance during periods of the works.
