We are repairing and renewing the War Memorial in St James Park, Hawthorn. 

This is an action in the draft St James Park master plan. It’s funded through our 2024-25 Council Budget, with support from the Australian and Victorian Government. 

About the project

This 2-year project will be delivered in stages:

Investigation, planning and designFrom July to late 2024

Specialist consultants are inspecting the cenotaph on 11 and 12 July 2024.

They’ll develop a condition report. This report will guide what work needs to be carried out to renew and repair the cenotaph.

Restoration worksExpected to begin mid-2025 and be completed by March 2026 (subject to appointment of contractor)We’ll update our community when details about the works are confirmed. 

Subject to the condition report, the renewal and repair works are expected to include:

  • cleaning of granite, sandstone and brass
  • where required, mortar removal and replacement
  • replacement or resurfacing weathered stone
  • regilding gold leaf letters
  • repairing sword and wreath fixings
  • adding theatres of war to the main structure or plaque to base
  • permanent replacement of the original plaque stolen prior to Anzac Day this year
  • installing power to the site to support Anzac Day and Remembrance Day events.
