Temporary closure of Reserve Road in Camberwell

A section of Reserve Road in Camberwell will be temporarily closed from Friday 24 January 2025.

Background

Council’s decision to close the road was based on concern for the safety of children crossing Reserve Road to access the two campuses of Camberwell Primary School.

Recent incidents in November 2024 involving a near miss with a student and a vehicle hitting the school fence have elevated the safety risks. 

Given the lack of further Council meetings in December 2024 prior to the new 2025 school year, Council proceeded with a decision to temporary close Reserve Rd without community consultation. This decision enables us to immediately address the safety risks raised by the school.

Any submissions received in response to the closure will be considered and presented to Council after school has returned in 2025.

Parking changes

A total of 66 parking spaces would be impacted (previously 79 parking spaces) by the temporary closure.
We have made parking changes along sections of Camberwell Road, Burke Road and Inglesby Road to provide alternate parking options. Access to the rear car parks of the Uniting Church, Our Lady of Victories Basilica and the school’s maintenance access will be maintained.

Through Camberwell Primary School, we have advised that Reserve Road will not be able to be used for school drop off and pick up purposes and have requested that the school advise parents and carers. We have provided new 5- and 10-minute parking spots on Camberwell Road and Inglesby Road, which parents and carers can use for drop off and pick up. There is also 2 hour parking available at the Butler Street car park, which is approximately 5 minutes’ walk from Camberwell Primary School.

Camberwell Road

  • On the school side of Camberwell Road there is now 3 hour parking with 5 and 10 minute parking during school drop off pick up periods. The fees that apply for the parking have been removed.

Burke Road

  • We have removed the fees from the 2 hour zone on the east side of Burke Road between St. John’s Anglican Church and Reserve Road.
  • We have also introduced three 10 minute parking bays north of Reserve Road that would operate between 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Between Reserve Road and Inglesby Road, the all day ticket parking on the east side of Burke Road along the Church has been converted to 3 hour parking. The fees that apply for this parking have been removed.
  • An additional 4 spaces (3 x 3 hour and 1 x 10 minute space) have been introduced on the same side where the former tram stop used to be located.

Inglesby Road

  • We now have 2 accessible parking bays on the school side of Inglesby Road at Burke Road.
  • There is 5 minute parking during morning and afternoon drop off pick up periods in the 2 hour parking zone, on the school side, from the playground to the Council offices. 
  • Parking along the south side of Ingleby Road has not changed. It remains 1 hour parking zone during the week.

New master plan for the precinct

We are developing a master plan for the precinct bounded by Camberwell Road, Burke Road and Inglesby Road. This precinct includes Reserve Road. The Boroondara community will be invited to have their say on the draft master plan in the coming months.
