The new Canterbury Community Precinct was completed in March 2024.

The precinct provides a centralised location for important early years services and community programs for all ages in our community, including:

  • Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre, including Canterbury Community Garden
  • Canterbury Gardens Kindergarten
  • Canterbury Maternal and Child Health service
  • Canterbury Toy Library
  • Playstation Occasional Care
  • Multicap
  • Canterbury History Group
  • Surrey Hills Historical Society.

These important community services previously operated in various locations in Canterbury. Co-locating them in one convenient precinct ensures the ongoing delivery of high-quality and easily accessible services to the community.

You can find out more about these services on our Canterbury Community Precinct page.

About the project

Canterbury Community Precinct is a major infrastructure project for Council.

We built a new building and restored the historical buildings in Canterbury Gardens to provide fit-for-purpose, accessible facilities.

Stage 1 involved constructing the new main building and renewing the former Canterbury Bowls Pavilion located on Kendall Street.

Stage 2 involved renewing the Canterbury Maternal and Child Health Centre on Kendall Street. The former Canterbury Public Library on Canterbury Road was also renewed and named Maling Heritage Centre following community consultation.

The project budget was $11.7 million. The Victorian Government contributed $1.6 million to the project through the Children’s Facilities Capital Program, aimed at providing local families with access to great local kindergartens. The Victorian Government also provided an additional grant of $110,000 as part of the Changing Places funding initiative.
