About the program

We visit high schools twice a year to vaccinate Year 7 and Year 10 students.

We do this as part of the National Immunisation Program (NIP) Schedule – a series of immunisations given at specific times throughout life, from birth through to adulthood.

Find out more about the NIP on the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care website.

How to give consent

At the start of the school year, your child's high school will tell you about the Secondary School Immunisation Program.

They will give you a consent form, which you need to complete if you want your child to be vaccinated.

If you don’t want your child to be vaccinated, you still need to complete this form. This helps us:

  • confirm that all students have been given the opportunity to take part in this program.
  • understand the level of community protection against vaccine-preventable diseases.

If you don’t receive the information and consent forms, you need to contact your school.

If you'd like to receive the consent forms and disease information in languages other than English, email our immunisation team at [email protected] or call us on (03) 9278 4711.

Recommended immunisations

Year 7

Two vaccines are recommended in Year 7:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine
  • Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine

Year 10

Only the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine is recommended in Year 10.

Find out more about HPV, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis and Meningococcal ACWY on the Victorian Government's Better Health Channel website.

What to expect on the day

We have created 2 short videos to help you and your child know what to expect on the day they are vaccinated.

  • The first video shows our nurses talking about what to expect.
  • The second video shows students talking about their experiences on the day.

Catch-up sessions

We provide catch-up sessions for all Boroondara students who miss school vaccinations.

Eligible young people can be vaccinated for free until they're 19, or for a cost after they turn 20. The HPV vaccine is free for people up to 25 years of age.

Make a booking on our Immunisation page.

If you're not sure of your child’s current vaccination status, you can download an immunisation history statement from the MyGov website.
