Boroondara has a variety of shared paths for everyone to use and enjoy, including:
- 75 kilometres of informal off-road paths around our parks and gardens
- 37 kilometres of formal shared paths, including the Gardiners Creek Trail and the Main Yarra Trail.
Whether you’re commuting to work on a bike or enjoying a casual stroll with your dog, we all need to look out for each other so we can get home safely.
Staying safe
Here are a few ways you can keep yourself and others safe on our shared paths.
When you’re riding:
- Slow down to a jogging pace when approaching others.
- Let pedestrians know when you’re about to pass – ring your bell or say ‘passing’.
- Pass pedestrians in a single file.
- Give way to pedestrians.
- Give a hand signal when turning.
When you’re walking:
- Keep to the left.
- Be alert to what’s going on around you – mobile phones and headphones can be distracting.
- Look out for people riding bikes when you change direction.
- Keep your dog on a short lead next to you.
When you’re e-riding:
- In line with Australian regulations, make sure your motor has 250 watts maximum power.
- Keep to one person per device.
Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be used on shared paths.
Improving shared paths
The Boroondara Bicycle Strategy sets a framework to improve infrastructure and education for bike riders and pedestrians in the City of Boroondara over the next 10 years.
As part of the strategy, we’re committed to creating a high-quality, off-road shared path network.
Visit our Bicycle Strategy page for more information and to stay updated on our progress.
More information for bike riders
Bicycles are vehicles and, under the law, bike riders have the same rights and responsibilities as car drivers.
To stay safe when riding, make sure you obey the road rules, ride in a sensible and predictable manner and share the road respectfully and safely with other road users. It’s also important to have the right bike safety gear and keep your bike in good order.

We offer a number of bike skills workshops covering key cycling skills, including bike maintenance.
