In Australia, agriculture contributes around 13% of our greenhouse gas emissions each year due to:
- cows and sheep releasing methane as they digest grass and plants
- cattle waste, used as fertiliser, releasing nitrous oxide.
What can you do?
If you’re looking for ways to reduce your emissions, you can:
- include more plant-based foods like fruit and lentils in your diet, which use less energy, land and water compared with animal-based foods
- choose Australian-produced food with less packaging
- take reusable produce bags to the supermarket
- consider growing your own fruit and vegetables at home
- throw away less food – producing, transporting and letting food rot contributes to more than 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Cooking with induction workshop
Have you ever wondered how induction cooking works? Induction cooktops are more energy-efficient than ceramic or gas cooktops, helping reduce your emissions.
Join charitable organisation Open Table on Saturday 13 January for a free cooking demonstration (2 timeslots available). They’ll give you great induction cooking tips and show you how to serve up delicious, plant-based meals on an electric cooktop.
