Residential properties whose general waste bins are collected by us can book 2 free hard rubbish collections each financial year.
There is no annual hard waste collection in Boroondara. You must book a hard waste collection.
We do collections on all public holidays except Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Book a hard waste collection
There is high demand for this service. There may be a few weeks lead time between booking and fulfilling your booking.
If you need to book a hard waste collection urgently, please call us on (03) 9278 4444 Monday to Friday, between 8:00 am and 5:15 pm to request a booking.
Items placed on the kerb without a booking are considered to be illegally dumped and can result in a fine.

Non-compliance
If your hard waste doesn't comply with our requirements, we'll leave a non-compliance card in your letterbox to tell you what the issue is and what action to take.
You must remove the non-compliant items from your nature strip within 24 hours of receiving the notice.
Once you've made your pile compliant, contact us and we'll return to collect your hard waste. Return visits in this instance don't count as your second annual collection.
Consider sustainable alternatives
Find out what items we can recycle and what goes to landfill on our Reduce and recycle your waste page. For example, e-waste, metals and mattresses can be recycled but furniture and carpet will go to landfill.
Consider sustainable alternatives to hard waste whenever you can.
Also note: regular household waste, green waste or recycling should not go in your hard waste collection.
Apartment and unit bookings
If you live in an apartment block with 14 units or fewer and where bins are collected by us, you can book a collection for your unit.
If you live in an apartment block that has 15 units or more and where bins are collected by us, your body corporate needs to make the booking.
Prepare for a hard waste collection
Put your hard waste out no earlier than 2 days before your collection.
We will send you an orange hard waste sticker in the mail a few days before your collection. Please put this in a visible spot on your hard waste pile. The sticker is to inform neighbours and our officers that the waste hasn't been dumped.
If the mail is delayed and you don't receive your sticker in time, we’ll still collect your booked hard waste.
We'll send you an SMS reminder 7 days before the booked service if you select this option when making your booking.
Where to put your hard waste
Put the hard waste on the nature strip outside your house or apartment.
Keep the footpath clear and easy to access. It's helpful if there are no vehicles parked in front of your pile.
If you don't have a nature strip, place your material on the footpath at the front of your property the night before collection.
We cannot:
- collect hard waste from private property like front yards and driveways
- assist with removing items from your home
- collect from laneways.
How much waste you can put out
The size of your pile can't be bigger than 2 m3. This is around what would fit into 2 small trailers.
Hard waste items need to be:
- no longer than 150 cm each (except mattresses)
- able to be lifted by 2 people.
How to sort your hard waste
You should separate your hard waste into 4 piles:
- General hard waste: such as bric-a-brac, plates, cups, furniture, and wood.
- Mattresses: mattresses and bed bases (all sizes).
- E-waste: such as kettles, toasters, computers, monitors, TVs and DVD players.
- Large metal items: such as washing machines, dishwashers, fridges (for safety reasons, tape all doors shut) and small car parts.
These piles may be collected on the same day by different trucks.
Avoid fines
You might get a fine if:
- you put your hard waste out too early (more than 2 days before your collection)
- there are items in your pile that we don't accept.
If people add to your hard waste pile and you're worried about going over the maximum amount, you can:
- report it online as a litter issue
- call us on (03) 9278 4444.
Change or cancel a booking
Please call us on (03) 9278 4444 at least 2 business days before your scheduled collection to:
- change the date of your collection
- cancel it.
Ineligible properties
These 3 types of properties are not eligible for hard waste collection:
- Commercial properties
- Residential properties that pay a Waste Environmental Levy (a contribution to waste and rubbish collection from public places applied to vacant land).
- Residential and commercial properties that have to manage their own rubbish as a condition of a Town Planning permit.
