Helping native fauna in heatwaves

Hot temperatures and heatwaves can pose a threat and cause stress to our native species.

Here are some tips for supporting wildlife during heatwaves:

Provide fresh water

Set up shallow containers of water in shady areas of your garden to keep our wildlife hydrated. Make sure you place a rock or stick in the container so that smaller animals can get in and out of the water safely.

Remember to keep the water fresh by changing it daily, this will help wildlife stay healthy and prevent mosquitos!

Create shelter

Native animals seek refuge from the heat in shaded areas or dense vegetation. You can help by planting native trees and shrubs to offer them natural cooling spaces.

You can also create makeshift shelters by adding logs and placing bird boxes or artificial nests in shady areas in your garden.

Report injured animals

If you see a heat-stressed or injured animal, contact Wildlife Victoria immediately on (03) 8400 7300.

By taking these simple steps, we can help protect Australia's unique wildlife during periods of extreme heat, ensuring they stay safe and healthy.
