Everyone has the right to feel safe.
Some older people are denied these rights. This is called elder abuse, and it is never okay.
Elder abuse is any act which harms an older person and is carried out by someone they trust, such as a family member, friend, or carer. It can take many forms including financial, emotional, or physical abuse.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare website, 1 in 6 people have experienced a form of elder abuse. 1 in 2 of these perpetrators is a close family member, just like in Antonio’s experience.
Antonio’s story
Antonio was pressured by his son, Michael, to transfer half of his house. Antonio also discovered Michael was stealing money from his account. When Antonio tried to raise these issues, Michael became aggressive and threatened to harm him.
Antonio felt he no longer had control of his money or his life.
Antonio reached out for help and was given support to recover his assets, as well as increase his safety.
Boroondara has one of the largest populations of older adults in Victoria. We’re committed to helping older people in our community, like Antonio, to stay safe.
