What's on in Boroondara

An artwork of 3 Aboriginal people with traditional paint on their bodies, looking at an old fashioned film camera

From our Repair and Reuse Community Day to fitness classes, 2 new summer exhibitions and a cinema session on the man who may have been our first Aboriginal film-maker, there’s plenty going on in Boroondara.

Marking Remembrance Day

On 11 November, we mark 105 years since the end of World War One and recognise the sacrifices of all Australian servicemen and women who played a part in that conflict.

Remembrance Day events are a special way to acknowledge those who served in both world wars and more recent conflicts. Find out more about our local memorials and any commemorative events on our Commemorating Remembrance Day in Boroondara news page.

How to repair and reuse

Are you looking for practical solutions to reduce what you send to landfill and make your possessions last longer?

From clothing, electronics and furniture to bikes and gardening tools, join us at the Boroondara Repair and Reuse Community Day to learn about the local repair and reuse economy. Individuals, repair business leaders and community groups will showcase simple solutions and strategies.

This event will take place on Saturday 18 November from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Hawthorn Arts Centre. Find out about all the stallholders and what you can bring along to participate in the day on our Boroondara Repair and Reuse Community Day event page.

Playing our part to prevent gender-based violence

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign runs from Saturday 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to Sunday 10 December (Human Rights Day).

This is a global movement to facilitate conversations and highlight the issue of violence against women. This year, we will be hosting events during 16 Days of Activism to encourage conversations and raise awareness. To find out more, visit our 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence news page.

Christmas is coming to Boroondara

Local neighbourhoods will become a little more festive over coming weeks as our annual Christmas decorations bring holiday cheer to Boroondara streets and civic buildings.

Our Christmas book-giving program also returns to support You Matter, which helps women and families who have experienced family violence. Donate your gifts of new books at Boroondara libraries by 15 December, and they will be distributed to families in need.

You can also enjoy Council-supported Christmas carols at parks and venues across Boroondara, plus a special Christmas concert at Hawthorn Arts Centre.

What’s happening at Boroondara Arts

Two new exhibitions will take Town Hall Gallery visitors into the summer months. Our Place: 20 Years of the Town Hall Gallery is a major exhibition celebrating the gallery’s 20th anniversary, with significant artworks from the Town Hall Gallery Collection showcasing its vital role in reflecting a sense of our community. The Boroondara Summer Salon is a curated group community exhibition celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Town Hall Gallery Community Exhibitions Program. Celia Moriarty transports viewers into the lush landscapes of Boroondara in Love the One You’re With.

At Hawthorn Arts Centre, Of Birds and Monuments features award-winning works by Melbourne composers Linda Kouvaras and Jane Hammond, and is the result of unique collaborations with Indigenous artists. Miss George and her band bring the timeless music of Diana Krall to the Kew Court House stage. And a cinema session of Ablaze brings the story of William ‘Bill’ Onus to the screen, after an unearthed 70-year-old silent film reel suggests he might have been the first Aboriginal film-maker.
