Streetscape upgrades for Maling Road

A section of Canterbury’s iconic Maling Road will go one-way as we work to make the shopping strip safer and more vibrant by widening footpaths, adding street trees and improving pedestrian crossings.

In April and May this year, we shared 2 concept designs with the community for feedback. Each option would deliver these improvements to different degrees. More than 800 community members and business owners shared their thoughts on the designs, which originally appeared in the adopted Maling Road Place Plan.

In September, Council endorsed the recommendation to progress the design of the Maling Road upgrade with one-way traffic between Canterbury Road and Bryson Street. Of the 2 options, the chosen design will deliver the biggest increase in public space and greatest improvement to pedestrian safety with the least impact to on-road parking.

What happens next?

We’ll develop a more detailed design for the one-way concept and, based on community feedback, implement traffic-management measures to mitigate any potential impact of the change to one-way traffic.
