A new Boroondara Heritage Strategy will guide our heritage work for the next decade and beyond.

Do you live in or near a heritage property? Chances are it was part of our Heritage Action Plan, which set out in 2016 to guide our heritage work program, and has now been completed.

The Heritage Action Plan focused on identifying, protecting, managing and promoting Boroondara’s heritage places. This included the suburb-wide assessments undertaken through the Municipal Wide Heritage Gap Study. Through this process, around 5,000 additional properties were added to the Heritage Overlay in the Boroondara Planning Scheme. The Heritage Overlay protects places of aesthetic, social, historic, technical or associational significance. This helps ensure new development won’t negatively impact the heritage significance of a place or precinct.

We’re now looking towards developing a new Heritage Strategy that will broaden the scope of our heritage-related work over the next 10 to 15 years. A future-focused Heritage Strategy allows us to protect Boroondara’s heritage for our community through a coordinated, municipal-wide approach.

It will follow best-practice guidelines as established in Heritage Victoria’s ‘Municipal Heritage Strategies Guide for Councils’ and address 4 themes:

  • knowing our heritage
  • protecting our heritage
  • supporting our heritage
  • promoting our heritage.
