A new home for community services

It’s time to discover what’s there for you at your new Canterbury Community Precinct.

The doors are now open and important community health, education and children’s services are operating on site in one convenient location.

Set in Canterbury Gardens, the precinct offers a vibrant and welcoming environment designed to complement and celebrate the beautiful local character and heritage of the area.

In the new building, you’ll find:

  • Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre offering a wide range of programs and activities for community members of all ages and abilities, including the Canterbury Community Garden.
  • Canterbury Gardens Kindergarten offering 3- and 4-year-old sessional kindergarten programs.
  • Playstation occasional care providing care for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years.
  • Canterbury Toy Library where members can borrow toys and games from their diverse collection.
  • Canterbury Maternal and Child Health service providing free child health, wellbeing and developmental checks, and information for new parents on health topics for children from birth to school age.

There are also spaces for hire including 2 community rooms, an art room and a workshop.

Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre manager Tracey Martin says housing these services in one location provides a unique opportunity for people of all ages to come together and create strong connections within their community.

'We have grandparents bringing their little ones to children’s services and then coming and asking what activities are available for them. It’s providing a space for all of the community to gather, to learn and to grow,' she says.

'Seeing the energy and the joy of the community is so exciting. It is amazing to have a space where members can come and sit and have a cup of coffee and call this place their own.'

Stage 2 refurbishment works

Works are underway to refurbish the 2 buildings that were previously home to Canterbury Maternal and Child Health Centre and the former Canterbury Public Library.

Once completed, these spaces will be home to Interchange Inner East offering disability and support services, and Canterbury History Group and Surrey Hills Historical Society.

Works are expected to be completed in late-2023.
