Making connections through seniors clubs

An older Asian couple dance in a room full of other people dancing

Dozens of clubs are dedicated to helping older people in Boroondara live their lives to the full.

Before he joined the Chinese Seniors Cultural Association in Ashburton last year, Wu Kang was often home alone and sometimes felt lonely.

His wife Wang Rui He was busy with her social work in the community, and their adult children and grandkids were occupied with work and school.

To improve his wellbeing, Wu Kang was advised to socialise more and engage in activities like reading, puzzles and other stimulating ‘brain games’.

He found all the above at the Chinese Seniors Cultural Association, where he made new friends and regularly attends activities. Wang Rui has now joined too and they have taken up dancing.

She says his outlook has improved a lot. 'After events at the club, he’s got a smile on his face, he’s happier, more communicative and just more positive overall.’

This club is one of 14 that cater to the needs of older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities around City of Boroondara.

'The club has led to a lot of happiness for me,' says Wang Rui, 'and a great sense of belonging and fulfilment as a Chinese person living here. I’m grateful to have such associations in the community to improve the wellbeing of senior citizens.'

Staying connected in the community

Almost 40 seniors clubs operate in the City of Boroondara, offering a rich variety of activities including music, art, dancing, discussion groups and of course plenty of socialising.

They provide a great way for older members of the community to meet with others who have a shared interest, take up new hobbies, make friends and develop new skills.
