Work’s happening on site to bring this new state-of-the-art facility to life.
On site, the concrete slabs and panels are being reinstated and steel for the new structure is now being installed.
The new structural steel frame is being fabricated in a Melbourne workshop and being delivered to the site in stages for installation.
A quality assurance program is in place for all structural steelwork. The program is externally certified by Steelwork Compliance Australia and involves rigorous testing at every step, to ensure all structural steel components are made and installed to meet the highest Australian Standards.
Environmentally friendly features
The design for the new centre keeps sustainability front of mind, with features including:
- a 500 KW solar panel system
- high-performance insulation, glazing and air-tightness to reduce energy use
- storage of the pool waste water to be reused for toilet flushing
- water-efficient fittings and fixtures
- rainwater harvesting to be re-used for landscape irrigation.
At a Council meeting in February, councillors decided to go ahead with developing detailed designs to install heat pumps at the centre to heat the swimming pools. Using electric heat pumps is more energy-efficient than gas boilers and will produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions. This will make the centre an all-electric facility – consistent with our Climate Action Plan goal to transition Council buildings away from natural gas.
