Heritage can be more than historic buildings. Have your say as we look to celebrate all forms of heritage.
Did you know you can hear directly from local people who lived through the Great Depression, the Spanish flu pandemic or the First World War?
Their stories are preserved and shared through our oral history collection, held at Hawthorn Library.
Heritage is part of who we are as a community and helps form Boroondara’s identity. It’s the parts of our history we don’t want to lose.
It can include the Hawthorn Pipe Band, which has performed here for more than 100 years. It can include local Aboriginal heritage, like the archaeological sites of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, which include scarred trees along the Yarra River.
Heritage can also include things that can’t be seen, such as the stories of those who came before us, and more tangible elements like neighbourhood character and our natural environment.
Heritage is what we inherit, appreciate and believe is important to share with future generations.
Our Heritage Action Plan 2016 guided how we recognise and preserve heritage in Boroondara to date. Now we’ve completed it, we’re looking to the future by developing our new heritage strategy.
What does heritage mean to you?
We want to hear what relics of the past you think we should celebrate and pass on to those who come after us. You can help progress the conversation, and guide how we promote and celebrate heritage, in all its forms.
What do you believe is important to preserve for future generations?
Have your say on our consultation website or at our in-person events until 5 pm on Friday 8 July. Find out more on our What does heritage mean to you? consultation page.
