Sustainable House Day is an annual event that gives you an opportunity to explore some of Australia’s most inspiring, eco-friendly homes. You'll hear directly from the people who designed, built and live in them.

Whether you're building a new home, renovating or just looking for tips, there's something for everyone.

Presentation and panel discussion

Join us for an evening on building sustainable homes in Boroondara. Architect and heritage consultant, Ruth Redden, will share: 

  • tips on how to incorporate sustainability into your heritage home
  • advice on building a Passive House. 

There'll be a question and answer session with 4 Boroondara residents whose homes are featured in Sustainable House Day. They'll offer real-world examples and experiences of sustainable home design and renovation.

This free event is at 6 pm Thursday 22 May at Hawthorn Arts Centre.

Open house tours

Boroondara residents with sustainable houses are here to show you how to make your home more comfortable and cost-effective. 

Check out homes in your area that have incorporated sustainable features, from small changes to major renovations, including:

Features you can explore 

Each home on the tour has at least 4 sustainable features, including:

  • insulation
  • double-glazing
  • energy-efficient appliances such as heat pump hot water
  • reverse-cycle heating and cooling
  • induction cooktops
  • solar panels and batteries
  • electric vehicles chargers
  • water-efficient appliances and gardens.

You can look at the features of the open homes online and select which ones you’d like to visit.

Online webinars

From Monday 5 May, you can join ticketed webinars with architects, designers, tradespeople and homeowners who can help you create a more sustainable home.

They’ll cover topics like:

  • finding a sustainable architect and builder
  • building with natural materials
  • insulation, energy efficiency and much more.
