Congratulations to the winners of our 2024 Boroondara Photograph Competition. They've brought fresh eyes to our neighbourhoods, capturing 'slice of life' Boroondara moments – from a street festival to the closest of creature close-ups.
David Bignell won first place in the open competition and best in competition for ‘Oom Pa Pa’ (pictured above). It shows the Glenferrie Brass band in action at the Glenferrie Festival in March. Judges commented that it 'vividly encapsulates the energy and essence of the event'.
Mason Cumming took first prize in the primary-school section for ‘Pollination’. It shows a bee pollinating a sunflower in a local backyard. Judges said it showcases 'an exceptional level of detail and depth of field, capturing the viewer with its intricacies'.
Bach Tran won first place in the secondary-school section for 'Reflection under the bridge(s)'. Set under Glenferrie Road and the Monash Freeway, it focuses on water reflecting the underside of 2 bridges. 'This image is not only captivating but also beautifully embodies the essence of exploring Boroondara,' judges said.
Stephanie Prowse was first-place winner for a historical photograph. Taken in 1978, 'Miss Oonagh Griffin' features her great aunt and violinist, who dedicated 50 years to the Zelman Memorial Symphony Orchestra. Judges said the 'exquisitely composed photograph evokes a profound curiosity about its subject'.
Now in its eighth year, the competition received its highest number of entries to date. More than 600 photos will be added to our libraries’ important collection of local historical and contemporary images. These photos celebrate our community past and present and capture the places, spaces and natural environment around us.
All award-winning photos are displayed in the 'Explore Boroondara' exhibition at Town Hall Gallery until 10 August.
