Enjoying a long, feel-good bike ride is a great way to exercise, and riding locally is more accessible and appealing than ever. This is largely thanks to our network of formal shared paths as well as the informal paths around our parks.

Cyclists are among the fastest movers on our paths, so knowing how to share the space with others is vital. The following guidelines will help you ride safely.

  • Always give way to pedestrians and keep to the left unless it’s impractical to do so.
  • When approaching others, use your bell or voice for a friendly warning. A gentle ‘ding’ or ‘passing on your right’ can go a long way.
  • Pass at jogging pace and allow plenty of space when overtaking.
  • Travel at a safe speed. This means you can react quickly if needed, especially around off-lead parks and playgrounds.
