I am writing as the Mayor of Boroondara, on behalf of all Councillors, to provide an update on what we are doing in response to the State Government's proposed planning changes relating to housing around activity centres.
Since being sworn in as Councillors in mid-November, we have worked quickly to understand the latest information about these changes, including plans for Camberwell Junction, one of the first 10 pilot activity centres.
Last week, we met with advisors to the Planning Minister to convey our community's concerns, particularly about the impact on Boroondara’s unique and valued heritage precincts. While protecting our heritage remains a key priority, we also believe that working collaboratively with the State Government to establish a productive dialogue is the best way to achieve better housing and planning outcomes.
By taking this approach, we aim to work collaboratively to ensure future developments are carefully planned, respecting the character and history of our area while addressing community needs.
We also recognise the importance of providing housing in accessible, well-serviced locations, including opportunities for affordable housing. Sites like the Kew VicRoads property present an important opportunity to create inclusive housing options that serve our community now and into the future.
There will be further announcements from the Government in the new year that will elaborate on these planning changes. We are committed to using this opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the Minister and the Department of Transport and Planning to achieve the outcomes that reflect the needs and expectations of the Boroondara community. We were encouraged by this opportunity to engage with the Planning Minister's office and look forward to building on this progress with a foreshadowed follow-up meeting early next year.

Thank you for your continued interest and support in shaping Boroondara’s future.
