Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Boroondara with festive events and displays for the whole family to enjoy. In 2025, Lunar New Year falls on Wednesday 29 January and marks the start of the Year of the Snake.

We will be lighting up Hawthorn Arts Centre in red on Wednesday 29 January to mark the start of the Lunar New Year. Across Boroondara, we’ll be celebrating the occasion with a variety of other events over the coming weeks.

What’s on this year

Bring in the Lunar New Year with free (and ticketed) events and activities for you to enjoy.

Events and activities include:

  • Lunar New Year immersive art activation at Hawthorn Arts Centre – Blossoms of Renewal – Monday 20 January to Friday 28 February 
  • Greythorn Library Storytime and Lion Dance – Saturday 1 February
  • Lunar New Year @ Camberwell Fresh Food Market – Saturday 1 February
  • Guzheng in the Park at Maranoa Botanic Gardens – Sunday 2 February
  • Lunar New Year Lion Dance at Camberwell Library – Friday 7 February
  • Lunar New Year @ Maling Road – Saturday 8 February
  • Lunar New Year Music Experience event at Hawthorn Arts Centre – Sunday 9 February  
  • ‘Illuminating Harmony’ concert at Hawthorn Arts Centre – Sunday 9 February 
  • Lunar New Year dumpling making workshop – Thursday 13 February
  • Classical in the Park at Maranoa Botanic Gardens – Saturday 15 February
