Council meeting update
We’ve prepared a report on replacing gas boilers with heat pumps to heat the pools at the new Kew Recreation Centre. This follows a decision made at the Council meeting on Monday 9 December 2024. Visit our Additional Council meeting 9 December page for more information.
We’ll present the report to Councillors at the Council meeting next Monday 24 February 2025 from 6:30 pm. Visit our Council meeting 24 February page to:
- download and read the report
- watch the meeting online, as a live stream or as a recording after the meeting.
You can also attend the meeting in person at 8 Inglesby Road, Camberwell.
Construction update
Progress is being made as we build this new state-of-the-art facility, catering to our community’s health and wellbeing needs. At this stage, construction is expected to be completed by late 2026.
What’s been done recently?
- All remaining structural steel has been removed from the site.
- Steel for the new structure is now being installed.
What’s next?
- On site, the concrete slabs and panels are being reinstated.
- The new structural steel frame is being built off site in a Melbourne-based workshop. The steel frame will be delivered to the site in stages, so you’ll start to see the new centre take shape over the coming months.

Safety
Safety remains the top priority.
A quality assurance program is in place for all structural steelwork. The program is externally certified by Steelwork Compliance Australia and involves rigorous testing at every step, to ensure that all structural steel components are fabricated and installed to meet the highest Australian Standards.
In Australia, most steel structures like the Kew Recreation Centre are expected to meet the ‘construction category 2’ standard. However, the new Kew Recreation Centre will exceed this by meeting the higher ‘construction category 3’ standard.
