National Homelessness Week (5 to 11 August) reminds us to talk about homelessness and to advocate for better solutions.
Homelessness is more widespread than the visible experience of people sleeping rough on the streets. Many people have a hidden experience:
- living in short-term accommodation
- sleeping in their cars
- couch-surfing
- living in overcrowded housing.
In the 2021 Census, 320 people in Boroondara reported being homeless. This is likely to be underestimated given the barriers to completing the Census if you don’t have access to accommodation.
Find support
Our Help at Hand guide has crisis support services and advice for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Find it at your nearest library, our customer service counter and on our Homelessness support services and resources page.
We also have advice for what do you if you see someone experiencing homelessness.
We recognise there isn't enough social housing or funding for homelessness service providers to meet demand. We regularly advocate on behalf of our community to the Victorian and Australian Governments to do more to fund housing and homelessness services across Australia.
