Anzac Day commemorates the anniversary of the Gallipoli landings made by Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops on 25 April 1915. 2025 marks 110 years since this event, which was a major operation of the First World War. Today Anzac Day is a day to remember the lives of all Australians lost in the First World War, and those killed in military operations ever since.

Boroondara remembers

During the First World War, 4,786 residents from across Camberwell, Hawthorn and Kew enlisted in Australia’s armed forces. Of these, 601 did not return home. War memorials honouring those who died are found across Boroondara, including:

  • Beckett Park Soldiers Memorial
  • Hawthorn War Memorial in St James Park
  • Kew War Memorial at Kew Junction*
  • Surrey Gardens Cross
  • Surrey Gardens Shrine.

*At Kew War Memorial, the names of those inscribed on the monument can also be found on an online database called the Kew Remembers Project. The project is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Kew to honour locals who valiantly served in World War 1.
