In October, we celebrate seniors in Boroondara with a variety of events and activities to recognise the important contribution that older people make to our community.
This year, we hosted an extra special event to celebrate those seniors who have reached the incredible milestone of 100 years of age.
Twenty centenarians from across the community joined us for a high tea celebration at Hawthorn Arts Centre.
The event was the 20th Centenarians Celebration held by City of Boroondara and marked the 19th time that it’s been hosted by beloved Australian entertainer Pete Smith (pictured above with Sister Josephine Connell, age 105).
A story 100 years in the making
Our Centenarians Celebration was also a great reminder about the treasure trove of history and memories that these people embody.
After tea, guests were treated to musical entertainment, followed by a short film featuring interviews with fellow Boroondara centenarians.
The interviews were conducted with Rosina, Jim and Annie (all born in 1922) and Lorraine (born in 1919) – all of whom are Boroondara residents who shared some fantastic stories from their lives.
These interviews are part of an initiative called ‘The 100 Project’, the goal of which is to create a video keepsake of the life stories of centenarians for the family and future generations and to contribute to the Australian story.
Active ageing in the community
This event was organised and hosted by City of Boroondara’s Active Ageing team, who provide a range of services to support seniors' independence, good health and wellbeing.
