We are delivering a much-needed upgrade to the oval at Ashburton Park in Ashburton.

About the project

The oval at Ashburton Park is a popular sport and recreation space, used for cricket during summer and soccer during winter. These works will ensure the oval meets the needs of local sports clubs and the wider community well into the future.

The works include the installation of:

  • new underground drainage and irrigation systems
  • a new water storage tank and irrigation pump.

These works will support more efficient irrigation to the oval and improve water savings.

The new water storage tank and irrigation pump will be installed next to the existing storage shed located on the north-west corner of the park, behind the cricket practice wickets and near the playground.

The works will also include:

  • replacing the oval’s existing poor soil with a new sand profile and new turf surface
  • reconstructing the centre turf cricket wicket table
  • the construction of an onsite storage area for soccer goal posts on the central eastern side of the oval (Vears Road side), outside the oval perimeter fence.

These upgrade works are being funded as part of our 2023–24 Capital Works Program, which you can learn about in the full Council budget on our Council Budget 2023–24 page. The project is also supported by a $30,000 grant contribution from Cricket Australia.

Timeline

Works are underway to deliver a much-needed upgrade to the oval at Ashburton Park in Ashburton.

Works started in October 2023 and are anticipated to finish in mid-2024 (weather and contractor availability permitting).

During construction

During the works, the oval will not be available for use and will be fenced off for everyone’s safety.

Other areas of Ashburton Park, including the playground and Scout Hall, will remain accessible during these works, and we will aim to minimise disruption to surrounding residents.
