We are completing surface renewal works at both the north and south oval at Dorothy Laver Reserve West on Dunlop Street, Glen Iris.

Status

The first stage of works commenced in January 2024 and is expected to be completed in May 2024.

About the project

Stage 1 works will involve resurfacing and relevelling the 2 playing fields as well as adding new drainage lines to maintain and enhance drainage before the new sand surface and natural turf is installed.

We are pleased to deliver these works to support the continued use of the reserve by local sporting clubs and community members for sport and recreation activities.

Turf reinforcement

We will also be completing a second stage of works later in 2024 to reinforce the turf in high-use areas on both ovals, particularly goal areas, penalty spots, corner arcs and centre spots on both fields. The playing fields will remain open during this stage of works.

This work will involve stitching a hybrid turf into a combined area of approximately 10% of the playing fields, as well as some of the high-use areas between the pavilion and playing fields. The hybrid turf being used is a 95% natural grass surface with high performance polyethylene fibres inserted into the surface, reducing wear in high-use areas and supporting turf recovery.

This is consistent with the practice across a number of grounds in Boroondara. As the hybrid turf fibres are stitched into the surface, there should be no impact on the surrounding natural environment.

During the works

Works will occur Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm, and some Saturday works may occur if required.

The playing fields will not be accessible for the duration of the works. Ashburton United Soccer Club and Alamein Football Club will be relocated to alternative sportsgrounds during these works.

If you use Dorothy Laver Reserve West for recreation, we encourage you to use the nearby Dorothy Laver Reserve East. For dog walkers who use the reserve as a dog on-leash area, Dorothy Laver Reserve East is also a dog on-leash area or alternatively Eric Raven Reserve is the nearest dog off-leash area.

During works, trucks will access the reserve via the road off Dunlop Street next to East Malvern Tennis Club and carpark. We will work with our contractors and the tennis club to minimise any impacts to carpark access during the works.
