Sports clubs, volunteers and athletes were recognised in our annual Boroondara Sports Awards in September.

Hosted by Australian cricket legend Damien Fleming, the 2023 Boroondara Sports Awards recognise the important role sports clubs play in enhancing community health and wellbeing, increasing participation in physical activity, and fostering social connection.

Sixteen-year-old para-athlete from Kew Little Athletics, Tom Roach, was awarded Community Athlete of the Year, alongside Liam Henderson from Camberwell Hockey Club. Tom says that in addition to enjoying the sausage sizzle at the end of a Saturday competition, community sport has given him the opportunity to challenge himself and to build friendships outside of school.

'I think it’s important to do community sport because you meet new people and some of them become your best mates as you spend a lot of time together doing something you’re passionate about,' says Tom. 'It also gives me a chance to compete and improve my skills in a friendly and supportive environment. It’s certainly taught me that if I work hard, anything is possible.'

This year there were more than 50 nominations, with awards presented across 7 categories.

Congratulations to the finalists and winners in all categories! View the finalists and winners on our Sports Award winners 2023 page.
