Message from the Mayor, Cr Felicity Sinfield

My time as Mayor of Boroondara has allowed me to meet an array of people who contribute to our community in different ways. So many give their time, energy and skills to make a positive difference.

Council is pleased to recognise community-minded local people through a series of awards throughout each year – small but significant rewards for years or often decades of service. In September, I presided over our fourth Boroondara Sports Awards and second Boroondara Youth Awards ceremonies.

Our Sports Awards are an opportunity to recognise the work of sport clubs and the legion of individuals who volunteer their time to ensure these community clubs keep growing. Local sports clubs bring together people with a common passion – nominees this year ranged from cricket to archery, tennis to petanque. By training together, building skills and fitness, sharing wins and losses, club members also build important social connections and enhance their health and wellbeing. All of this is made possible by the unpaid work and dedication of club volunteers.

In Boroondara, we strive to be a city where children and young people are valued, happy, healthy and safe. We also know the young people in our community are our leaders of tomorrow and play a vital role in achieving a thriving community into the future. After meeting the impressive set of finalists for our Youth Awards, I am confident our future is in safe hands. I also recognise that behind every young person making a difference is a support network of parents, teachers, support and wellbeing workers, and often volunteers.

I congratulate all those nominated for these awards, and thank them for all they have done and continue to do for us. You can read more about the awards in this issue of the Bulletin.
