Embracing difference on the pitch

Last year, Camberwell Hockey Club took home City of Boroondara’s Inclusive Club of the Year award  from the 2022 Boroondara Sports Awards for their work in welcoming and engaging with under-represented groups and communities.

At Council, we embrace inclusivity and equality, and actively encourage and recognise the work of community groups in supporting this goal.

Camberwell Hockey Club is a fantastic example of a community group that embraces diversity and welcomes people of different genders, ages, ethnicities and sexualities.

It was one of 4 pilot clubs for Hockey Victoria’s Fair Go, Sport! initiative, introduced in 2010 to increase awareness of sexual and gender diversity in hockey while promoting safe and inclusive environments.

Camberwell Hockey Club continues to support LGBTQIA+ communities, with an annual Pride Cup tournament held in June during Pride Month, complete with all home teams wearing rainbow socks to demonstrate their support for gender and sexual diversity.
