From backyard food production to wildlife-friendly havens, our appetite to grow our own food and plants in Boroondara has never been greater.

That’s why we’ve partnered with 10 other local councils to bring you the award-winning My Smart Garden program. It’s a free, sustainable gardening program to help you transform your outdoor space into a thriving garden that provides food, habitat for wildlife, is climate ready and uses resources thoughtfully.

No matter the size of your garden space – even if it’s just a few pots – through the My Smart Garden program Boroondara residents will have the resources and advice they need to create their own ‘smart’ garden, including:

  • free sustainable gardening workshops, webinars and videos
  • a monthly eNewsletter with seasonal tips, recipes and upcoming events
  • access to case studies, recommended reading and articles
  • opportunities to swap and share advice with local gardeners.

What is a smart garden?

A smart garden takes a more sustainable approach to home gardening that will help you:

  • grow your own food
  • plant trees and vines to create a greener space that brings shelter from the sun and wind
  • create habitat for insects, birds and other animals
  • capture and use rainwater wisely
  • recycle food and other organic waste into mulch and fertiliser.
