10/26/2024 2:30 pm 10/26/2024 3:45 pm Kew Philharmonic Chamber Choir: Stella Splendens – Spanish Medieval Music Our concert surveys the rich and complex world of medieval Spanish music, reflecting the interplay between Christian, Moslem and Jewish people living on the Iberian peninsula in the period between the fall of the Roman Empire and the victory of Christian rulers in 1492.The main work is the complete set of 14th-century songs celebrating the Virgin Mary, preserved in the Llibre Vermell (‘Red Book’) held in the monastic library at Montserrat, Spain. We will also perform a few of the over 400 Cantigas de Santa Maria (‘Songs for the Virgin’), collected by Alfonso X of Castile (1221-84), as well as Sephardic Jewish music originating during the period.
