'On Whose Shoulders I Stand' by Susie Raz – online exhibition

This exhibition is a heartfelt homage to the overlooked women of Australian modernism, brought to life through Susie Raz’s vivid, large-scale self-portraits.

Each painting is a performance, where Raz embodies the struggles and triumphs of 20th-century female artists, creating an intimate dialogue across time that bridges their stories with her own.

This project sheds light on the systemic erasure of women from art history while serving as a transformative journey for Raz. By painting herself into these narratives, she claims space alongside these women, confronting and transcending her inherited self-doubt as an artist. Blending self expression with advocacy, the exhibition restores the rightful recognition of these women, celebrating their creativity and resilience in the face of historical exclusion.
