Read the first project bulletin for this major redevelopment.
Site
584-590 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn
Project overview
A multi-purpose space will be built for services for children, families and older residents on a site adjoining the Hawthorn Library. The current buildings are tired and inadequate for modern community use.
The project will involve construction of a two-level building that will house:
- all children's services on the lower level
- meeting rooms, lift and space for service functions on the lower level
- a combination of large, medium and small meeting rooms on the upper level and facilities for senior citizens and community services
- a secure outdoor play space with direct access from the playrooms
- open space to Glenferrie Road that will be enhanced through building setbacks
- a driveway to the north for access and parking purposes
- connections to the existing Hawthorn Library.
Estimated cost
$9.85 million
Construction
Estimated start date - 2010
Estimated end date - 2011
During construction
Several existing services will be temporarily relocated during the construction to ensure safety and continuous service. The Hawthorn Library will remain open and in its current location.
Community engagement
Community engagement with the general community has now finished and Council is now working with services users about their temporary relocation during the construction period.
