Arts and culture

Boroondara is home to rich and diverse artistic and cultural events and programs across a wide range of areas.

We support community arts organisations and individuals by providing programs and advice to help with the development of arts and cultural projects including exhibitions, performances and festivals. We also plan for future arts and cultural facilities, including the Hawthorn Town Hall Arts Precinct and the Kew Court House and Police Station. This work is guided by the principles outlined in the Arts and Cultural Strategy 2008-2013.

Range of programs

We produce a diverse range of programs throughout the year including:

Other major initiatives include the Town Hall Gallery and the monthly Hawthorn Craft Market.

One-off projects and events are also held to provide an opportunity for members of the community to enjoy all that the arts have to offer.

Grant assistance is also available annually to groups wishing to conduct innovative arts and cultural projects.

Arts and Cultural facilities

Council has two major arts and cultural facilities under development:

The former Kew Court House and Police Station

This heritage builidng was purchased from the State Government in 2007 for community purposes. In 2008 Council determined as part of the Arts and Cultural Strategy 2008 - 13 that the buildings would be restored as a "cultural hub". Work is steadily progressing, and the Court House will re-open in 2010 following extensive renovation.

Hawthorn Town Hall Arts Precinct.

The Hawthorn Town Hall is set to be converted into a new heritage-inspired arts and cultural space! Council's adopted Arts and Cultural Strategy 2008 - 2013, identifies "our vision is for a city of harmony where citizens can celebrate, share, express and experience a rich arts and cultural life".  It also presents the opportunity to convert the Hawthorn Town Hall into a key community cultural space. Concepts for the Hawthorn Town Hall arts precinct are now being developed for community consultation to determine the design of the facility expected in the new year.
