Boroondara - City of Harmony
'A new symbol for a new city'
This statement was announced to the municipality of Boroondara residents to show a new beginning. The current logo of Boroondara was a new sign to represent the coming together of the former cities.
The emblem represents the dynamic elements that were highlighted by a reference group, drawn from the community register of interest and the council.
It was clear that the design should focus on the future while drawing on the geography and history of the region. The group constantly recognised the rich history and the influence of water and trees within the urban environment.
The logo has three major components which form a leaf shape. The design is well balanced and contemporary in appeal. The colours of green and terracotta reflect the earthy nature of the topography and vegetation of the area.
The winding Yarra River and Gardiners Creek, which makes up a large proportion of the city's boundary, are symbolised on the left. Their organic nature and chosen colour have been created to express early aboriginal influences.
On the right, the more formal shape represents the structured settlement of Boroondarar and the leafy nature of the surroundings.
The circle within the leaf represents the community which is embraced and shaded by the other elements.
The logo in many instances will be accompanied by "City of Harmony", a statement of community purpose.
As you take time to appreciate the logo, we trust you will reflect on the things that make the City of Boroondara an enjoyable place to live.
What's in a name?
"Boroondara" was one of the earliest names for the area in which you live.
The accepted translation of the name is "a place in the shade" as the area was by all accounts densely wooded. For that reason, it was a prime source of timber for building materials and fuel for the burgeoning metropolis of Melbourne.
In July 1854, the Boroondara District Roads Board was established as the local authority (the second to be gazetted) before the creation of Hawthorn (1860), Kew (1860) and Boroondara (1871) as separate municipalities.
In 1871, the Shire of Boroondara was proclaimed before the name was later changed to City of Camberwell in 1914. Boroondara has remained the parish name from early times.
City of Boroondara was proclaimed on 22 June 1994.
How you say it
How you say it is slightly different from how you spell it...have a go, it's easy!

Design background
The unveiling of our city symbol came after a long period of seeking the elements that would best represent the area.
A community reference group from the community register and other interested members of the public were invited to provide guidance on the project.
Design group FHA Image Design, who specialise in corporate image, participated in the discussions and accepted the brief before presenting the final logo. The advisorty group was delighted with the outcome.
Council still today wishes to thank the team of people who gave their time and offered constructive and definite ideas on the new symbol for a new city.
